Unique corners of Mangystau
5 million years ago, Ustyurt was covered with water - the Tethys ocean raged here. Now the land that has risen from the sea resembles the surface of a fantastic planet and enchants everyone who has ever visited these places or just saw photos of salt marshes or chinks.
The Ustyurt Plateau is famous for its “chinks” - steep ledges and cliffs. Chinks are formed by marine sediments of various geological eras. Caves, grottoes, niches and chink sites not only attract the attention of tourists, but also provide shelter for animals living here. The most famous and beautiful is the western chink of the Ustyurt plateau.
Mangystau territory - is a region of ancient civilization, archeological reserve, open air museum that has more than 11 thousand historic monuments protected by the state. Ancient burial grounds, mausoleums, medieval underground mosques, remaining of ancient settlements leave absolutely special impression. Ancient cemeteries with their magnificent mausoleums serve as beautiful additions to this special region.
Mangystau - the edge of a stunning landscape
Mangystau region is located in the south-west of Kazakhstan, formerly named Mangyshlak region.
The region was formed on March 20, 1973 from the southern part of Guryev region. In 1988, it was extinct and reestablished in 1990 as Mangystau region. The region borders with Atyrau and Aktobe regions in the north-west, Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran in the west, Turkmenistan in the south and Uzbekistan in the east. The length of the internal borders of the region is 319 km, external borders – 1173 km including 810 km along the sea. The territory of Mangystau region makes 165.6 thousand sq km (6.1% of the territory of Kazakhstan). As of January December 1, 2009, the number of population made 443.1 thousand people (28% of the country’s population), including 234.7 thousand people of urban population, 208.3 thousand of rural population. The population density makes 2.7 people per one square kilometer.
